PROGRAM: A Trip to Cuzco and Machu Picchu
The
club was treated to a picture presentation of a trip taken by Jim and Joanne
Rogers and Joe and Audrey Trupia. They were members of a group consisting of
29 participants from throughout the US and England who toured South America in
April in 2005. The slide show covers only their trip to Cuzco and Machu
Picchu in the Peruvian Andes. Cuzco at an elevation of 11,500’ was the
ancient capital of the Inca Empire. Prior to taking the train to Machu Picchu
two bus trips took the group to places around Cuzco such as the: Sacred
Valley of the Incas and the
Urubanba
River (they had head waters of the Amazon River); llama farm and the Andean
cultural exhibit; Village of Pisac and Condor Mountain; Village of
Ollantaytambo where the Inca Trail to the Machu Picchu begins; sacsayhuman
(pronounced “sexy woman”); an
ancient
fortress of stone blocks, which from the air look like the teeth of a hugh
puma; and located
in the center of Cuzco, the Cathedral de Cuzco (right) and the Coricancha
Temple. When the Spanish Conquistador, Francisco Pizarro and his men marched
into the region in the early 16th century their conquest of Peru
was completed by the capture of Cuzco. The Coricancha Temple, the most sacred
and richest temple, was the center of power. Its walls were covered with 700
sheets of pure gold, each weighing about 2 kilograms (4.4 lbs). The Spanish
Conquistador’s stripped all the gold from the walls, melted it into ingots,
and shipped it off to Spain. There march through the villages in the sacred
valley took them looking for, but not finding, the royal estate or religious
retreat built high in the mountains called Machu Picchu. The very
informative program was greatly appreciated by all members and a thank you
was extended to Lt. Gov. Jim Rogers.
