INDUCTION OF NEW MEMBERS

Membership Co-Chair Joe Behson presented three candidates for membership in Sand Lake Kiwanis: Jean Hamlin, sponsored by Bob Loveridge. and Linda Ellis and Lyndon Ellis, both sponsored by Pres Pat Lane,  Joe presented each new member with name badges, their Kiwanis membership pin, a directory of members, an application for membership for each to recruit a new member, and of utmost importance, SLK’s own unique “Doo-Hickey”!  Co-Chair Bob Pasquarelli explained that they were now members of the best club in the world, Sand Lake, in the Van Rensselaer Division of New York District of Kiwanis International, which has about 1300 clubs in over 80 countries, all trying to improve their communities, and the world, one child at a time.  Linda and Lyndon live in West Sand Lake, and are both active in the WSL Fire Company.  Linda serves as the present president of the Sand Lake Seniors.  Jean Hamlin is originally from Minnesota, now living at Brookside in WSL, and has 16 grandchildren!  Welcome to Linda, Lyndon, and Jean—which committees will you serve on?

PROGRAM

John Brownrigg introduced Eric Dahl, from the Affordable Housing Partnership, and Tina Carten, from the NYSERDA Conservation Group, who explained how almost everyone can qualify for a free energy audit of their homes.  Application forms were distributed, and Eric pointed out that a qualified inspector would consult with owners after the house was checked for air leaks, lack of insulation, safety aspects of various appliances and heating apparatus.  Owners have 90 days following their application to have this part done.  Following the energy audit, correction work is optional.  Names of qualified and approved contractors will be supplied, financing is available, and retesting is done when work is completed.  The work can be done by the homeowner himself, or by a contractor of

his choosing, but the discounts described are only given if the work is done by an approved contractor.  Owners are advised to talk with individual contractors to decide what specific work will be done.  Bob Loveridge thanked both Eric and Tina for their enlightening talk, and presented each with our Certificate of Appreciation.

HAPPY DOLLARS

$     Peg Weiss:  Had a good time at Friday’s Valentine Cabin Fever Dinner sponsored by the Castleton Kiwanis Club.  There were 40 people attending, including 4 SLKs, (Booker, Lane, Wagner, & Weiss), so we qualified for an interclub!  Moscatiello’s food was delicious, and we met Ron’s, and Betty’s, families.  Ron has the most handsome and personable sons!

$     Bob Loveridge:  For our three new members!

$     Nancy Davis:  For the success of Saturday’s Bicentennial Valentine Dance at Crooked Lake!  Several SLKs were there, including Joe Trupia who played saxophone in the band!

$     Ken James:  I flew from San Francisco to NY in 5 hours, and was able to watch the progress and the route of the plane on a TV screen in front of my seat!

$     Skip Patton:  Had a great day today cross country skiing at Lapland Lakes with Nancy!

$     Eve Ward:  Peg and I had lunch at Friendly’s in Troy last Tuesday, and were surprised when a young man stopped at our table to wish us a Happy Valentine’s Day.  We were even more surprised when our waitress and others came to tell us that that couple had paid for our lunches as a Valentine’s Day gift to us!  There are some really nice people in this world!

$     Joe Trupia:  I’m very happy to be here after missing so many meetings!

$     Jim Colabelli:  For our 3 new members; for my neighbor Joe who watched our house while we were babysitting in Conn; and for my son-in-law’s continued recovery following open heart surgery last week!

$     Dick Johnsen:  Thanks for a great program!  I built my own house, with windows and doors from a former Kiwanian’s company, and I’m still having trouble with them!  On a brighter note, my alma mater, Syracuse U has only one loss!

$     Nancy Davis, again:  Happy Presidents’ Day!

$     Gary Meislin:  I bought a gold coin at an auction for $2900, had it assessed at $3000, and was offered $2700, so I guess I’ll keep it!

$     John Brownrigg:  Thanks to Tina for organizing tonight’s program!  I finally got my wife to dance at the Valentine’s Dance!  And, I was able to close on a corporate property for 1/3 of the assessed value!

$     Pat Lane:  Had an oil delivery last week for $900, and after I put my head back on, I was happy to be living in a warm house, and to be able to come to this great group!  And John Brownrigg won a STEWART’S gas card at the Division Council meeting!

DOOR PRIZE, provided by John Brownrigg, was won by Jim Colabelli!

50/50 for $24 was won by new member Jean Hamlin!  It pays to come to meetings, Jean!

MEGA 50/50 tonight was worth $95.00, and will keep growing, because John Brownrigg was unable to locate that King of Clubs—he picked the Ace of Diamonds!
