PROGRAM
Summerfest Chair Skip Patton presented an update on plans for this year’s biggest event, to be held over the Fourth of July weekend, and distributed a preliminary schedule. Crafters may begin to setup Thursday morning, and the amusement rides will begin that evening, continuing until Sunday evening. Barb Fioravanti has secured 3 bands which will perform each evening. Tennis tournament will be all day Saturday, softball tournament will be on Sunday. Road race will be early Sat morning, followed by the parade which should arrive at the park by noon when the SL Chorale will provide patriotic music. Averill Park teachers will be the honorees this year. Uncle Marty’s Adirondack Grille will provide a beer garden throughout the weekend. Food service is still to be decided, but a suggestion was made to ask the Castleton Club to do one of their chicken BBQs, (keeping the proceeds), since their BBQ location at the Castleton Firehouse was destroyed by a mudslide. A Variety Show is planned for Sat afternoon, and the Ecumenical church service will be Sunday morning, followed by coffee and donuts by SLK. Alonzo Fireworks will be Saturday night, and possibly another group will do them Sunday night the 4th. Cleanup is scheduled for Mon AM.
It was emphasized that the letters to sponsors must go out VERY soon, and any public information must be coordinated so that all dates and times are correctly stated.
MID YEAR CONFERENCE REPORTS
Four SLKs attended the Conference at Honors Haven Resort in Ellenville, NY, and each gave a brief report on the event. Joe Behson spoke of the excellent food, programs, and speakers. The major topic was improving our clubs, and making meetings FUN! Don’t be afraid to change things around, do things differently, try other activities. To help Kamp Kiwanis financially, each club in the NY District has been asked to send one more child than last year. Much of the emphasis was on membership and growth. Peg Weiss also praised the wonderful inspirational speakers, especially International President Paul Palazzollo, who is a really nice down to earth person. Pat Lane spoke very favorably of her first experience at the conference, and of meeting Kiwanians from all over the state. Gov Dave presided over each day’s meetings, and after much preparation work and many glitches, he’s glad it’s over! Distinguished Kiwanian Awards were presented to those who had brought in new members, and Gov Dave presented Jerry Tysiak with his Certificate tonight. Booker said he looked forward to getting some more sleep, since his roommate kept him awake over the weekend.
