INDUCTION
OF NEW MEMBER
Joe
Behson, representing our local club, Bob Pasquarelli, representing the
international organization, and Jim Colabelli, sponsor, introduced MIKE GROFF
to the Club. Mike had been a member of SLK about nineteen years ago, left due
to family and
business constraints, and would like to become an active member once again.
Joe and Bob brought Mike up to date on some changes that have occurred in
Kiwanis since his previous membership. Joe detailed the contents of the new
member packet, especially the membership application so Mike can convince
others to join, and of course, our unique doo-hickey! Bob provided the
statistics of international membership, and Jim attached Mike’s new pin.
Traditionally, Mike was allowed to speak briefly about himself, and he stated
that he was a land surveyor who came from Long Island in 1990, lives in Pond
Hollow near the Colabellis, and among other places, he worked for weeks at the
World Trade Center, helping to clean up after the tragedy. Welcome to Sand
Lake Kiwanis, Mike!

PROGRAM
Sponsored Youth Co-Chairs Barbara Fioravanti and John Mulligan brought us up to date on the activities of their committee. John works mainly with the AP Key Club, about 9-15 members, but they also oversee the K-Kids group in WSL Elementary School, and the new Builders Club at Algonquin Middle School. They have given financial support to the formation of the newly chartered Key Club at Tech Valley HS, and also supported the attendance of Key Clubbers to the recent Leadership Conference in Albany. In return the kids have helped us, sorting toys for the holiday giving, picking up trash along Route 351, and doing various jobs at Summerfest. Barb has engineered the formation of the new 16-18 member Builders Club. They are waiting for the arrival of their bell and banner, and they now have a faculty advisor, Liz Mahoney. Barb commented that Key Club activities are cyclical, that AP now is in a low spot, but they will rise again to their formerly very active status!
PROJECT ELIMINATE FUND RAISERS
LTG Bob Loveridge pointed out that we need to decide on some fund raisers to support the International Project EliMiNate in which Kiwanis is partnered with UNICEF to eradicate the scourge of tetanus from the world by immunizing prenatal women and children. Three doses of vaccine are needed at a low cost of about $2 each to prevent the agonizing deaths of newborns. Some of the ideas mentioned were a flea market, pancake breakfast, and spaghetti suppers. It was suggested that perhaps we could partner with the fire companies on the meals. Linda Ellis stated that WSL Fire Co is having an all you can eat breakfast on Sunday Apr 15th, and that the Ladies Auxiliary is having a flea market & craft show on Saturday Apr 21st. The breakfast is a monthly fund raiser for the fire company. Bob asked members to consider these options, and be ready to support this deserving cause of EliMiNate.
HAPPY DOLLARS
$ Pete Stevens: My daughter, who is a junior at Siena College, has received a $4000 M D Anderson scholarship to complete her internship!
