PROGRAM
Doug Baldrey
introduced himself to talk about the newest innovation from Hudson Valley
Community College, TEC-SMART, (Training and Education Center for Semiconductor
Manufacturing and Alternative and Renewable Technologies), a state-of-the-art
education facility in Malta that will allow HVCC to educate and train the
500-600 green energy technicians that the Capital Region’s growing Tech Valley
is expected to need over the next 5-10 years. It will also provide community
education to raise awareness of clean technologies and be a showcase for
sustainable design. Students will learn theory, design, and installation of
renewable energy technologies such as solar, solar thermal, wind, geothermal,
and alternative fuels such as hydrogen, biodiesel, ethanol, and fuel cells.
The facility is a joint initiative between the College and the New York State
Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA). HVCC is the second
largest college in the area after SUNY Albany, with 14,000 students, and about
1200 employees. This program will train workers for the new Global Foundry in
Saratoga County which will be manufacturing chips for many electronics
companies. The Troy campus is already using alternative energy sources, and
has a cogeneration plant powered by methane from the old Troy landfill,
enabling HVCC to be completely off the grid for power generation.
