PROGRAM

Jean Hamlin introduced Cindy Cruz from the Foster Grandparents Program,
a federally funded not-for-profit that uses older volunteers to help children
of all ages with their schoolwork, and to provide one-on-one attention in
controlled settings such as schools, pre-schools, churches and nurseries.
Persons who are over 55 years of age, and are physically able to work 15 to 40
hours per week, are needed to help teachers in classrooms or in after school
settings. The teachers match the “grandparents” with the kids according to
their needs and abilities. After an application form is completed, background
and fingerprint screenings are conducted, according to federal standards. A
small stipend is offered to volunteers. At present, there are more
“grandparents” working with pre-school and elementary children, but help is
needed at all age levels. Jean commented that she has worked for 3 years at
the Y, after school, helping with homework, and playing games and cards with
older kids. Several questions were posed, wondering w
hat
educational levels were required, and Cindy replied that a person’s comfort
level was considered before matching them with kids. More than anything, she
stressed that so many kids need love and attention, more than they are
receiving. Bob Pasquarelli thanked Cindy for her talk, and presented her with
our Certificate of Appreciation. Another opportunity to serve our community!

SPECIAL PRESENTATION
After we learned that today is the birthday of our wonderful waitress Wendy Herrington, she was called up to receive a birthday card signed by all members present, and was serenaded, in our own special off-key way, with the Birthday Song! By the end of the singing, Wendy’s face was almost the color of her beautiful hair! Happy Birthday, Wendy, from all of us!
HAPPY DOLLARS
$ Joe Behson: My lovely (broom) “guest” tonight is here to celebrate the “clean sweep” that the NY Yankees made over the Boston Red Sox this past weekend!
$ Skip Patton: You just got lucky! Anyway, the 3rd game was rained out, so it doesn’t really count. I saw the Red Sox win their last game last week, over the Tampa Bay Rays, at Fenway, just before their big 100th year celebration. And I also watched my nephew run the Boston Marathon!
$ Bryce Ginther: After six long weeks, I am finally SLING FREE!
HAPPY DOLLARS (cont.)
$ Jim Rogers: I had a great report from my surgeon on the state of healing in my back! We are packing, and hope to put our house on the market this summer. We’re looking to down size to a condo or apartment in the area.
$ Jean Hamlin: Thanks to Cindy for coming tonight!
$ Gary Meislin: My bathroom remodeling is almost finished! As soon as they put in the tile over the bathtub, I can get my female cat!
$ John Brownrigg: I got a progress report from the engineer on the impending roundabout on Route 4 in East Greenbush. Unfortunately a gas line ruptured, and they had to evacuate the surrounding area! The hoped for completion date is May 21st?
$ Pat Lane: At last, my new washing machine is coming tomorrow. So is my sister…she goes in it, and will be shipped out!
$ Dick Johnsen: Be careful what you wish for. Especially with a good wife like mine. She got me a full wet suit…for my birthday…for use with my kayak…in case I fall out. But I have a long trunk, and I couldn’t zip it up!!! {Pause for prolonged hilarity!} I took it back to the store, but I didn’t have my wife’s credit card! So I got a book! {“How to Put on a Wet Suit”?}
DOOR PRIZE, provided by Jean Hamlin, was won by Kevin Sarsfield!
50/50 for $28.50 was won by Gary Meislin!
MEGA 50/50 was worth $258 this week. John Brownrigg’s ticket was pulled, but he asked Eve, his lucky hand, to pick the card. Unfortunately, she drew the 6 of Clubs, not the King! Sorry, John!
