INTERNATIONAL CONVENTION REPORT

Dave Booker reviewed the amendments presented. He was quite pleased that our own Tom DeJulio was chosen International President-Elect. Tom has spent 44 years in the Kiwanis family, from Key Club, Circle K, and then Kiwanis. Kiwanis International is partnering with UNICEF in its new world-wide project to eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus, and also formed one of the first corporate Kiwanis Clubs with UNICEF.
Jim Rogers complimented Dave on his smooth handling of the NY District Board meeting. The caucuses were efficiently run, and Tom DeJulio’s campaign was well organized. He had a great time, Colin Powell gave an excellent talk, and Jay Leno is much better in person than on TV.
Jerry Tysiak was wearing Tom’s Team 44 T-shirts, and said more than 400 delegates wore them. Texas was the leading contender, not as easy going as NY, but NY was better organized. And I did NOT ride a bull!
Dudley Dorr was impressed with Las Vegas—some city—wall to wall
gambling! But we didn’t do any! It was very hot—high of 105, low of 87—but
very dry climate. Took a side trip to Arizona and had a helicopter ride over
and into the Grand Canyon, with champagne at the bottom!

PROGRAM
Ken James introduced Julie Martino who has been a model for Norman Rockwell. Julie moved to Lenox, MA in 1970, and was employed as executive assistant to the medical director of the psychiatric hospital in Stockbridge for 32 years. Early in her career, a photographer got past the receptionist, barging into her office, asking her age, and taking several pictures without permission. Julie eventually found out he worked for the artist Norman Rockwell, who wanted to use her in a painting as the mother of a little “cowboy” being scrubbed in a bathtub. That little boy was the son of a local contractor, and is now a male nurse. Julie described Rockwell’s amazing ability to swiftly and freehandedly sketch the perfectly parallel lines of the bathroom tiles! She showed the finished picture, which many of us recognized, for which she was given a check for $25, and described Rockwell’s regular habit of bicycling through the heart of town at exactly 11 AM every day. Julie still works at the Rockwell Museum giving tours. When she took her grandchildren through, the youngest exclaimed, “Grandma, I didn’t know you were so famous!” Dave Booker thanked Julie for a delightful program, and presented her with our Certificate of Appreciation.
HAPPY DOLLARS
$ Eve: Happy to see her granddaughter Alex graduate from 8th Grade, and grandson Ethan graduate from APHS. As of today, I have retired from the East Greenbush School District!
$ Nancy: Thanks for bringing the food trailer to the Library Fair, and thanks to Jim Colabelli for transporting the sign from Church of the Covenant to Botsy’s!
$
Booker: Enjoyed Las Vegas with Elvis, and pleased to be
governor when Tom DeJulio was elected. And I missed a photo opt with Jay Leno
by this much!![]()
$ Kevin: Celebrated my 62nd birthday yesterday and all 3 of my sons were home at the same time! We all played golf, and I beat my youngest son for the first time!
$ Fred: Made some cryptic comments about having the weekend off – from what?
$ Jim R: Really enjoyed Las Vegas. The last time I was there I was 13 years old, and we drove across the Mohave Desert, arriving in town about 6 AM. The Golden Nugget was the only casino on the strip! Now there are scores of them, with acres of gambling machines! But they still have great stage shows!
$ Ken J: Last time I was in Las Vegas was 1962, and I remember it being very HOT! Any kind of dress is okay in any casino or restaurant.
$ Armand: Here’s $10 for letting me sell the official Summerfest tee shirts!
$ Dudley: Thanks for letting me be your delegate!
$ Peg: Spent a week in VT taking care of my sister-in-law after she had both knees replaced. Pleased to report that she’s now walking and completely off the pain medication!
$ Gary: My son, the major from DC, is coming to visit tomorrow!
$ Pat: I loved Julie’s talk! And Sat was a very busy day for Nancy—she worked at the library, the blood drive, and then re-lettered the sign!
$ Jerry: There are lots of stories from our week in Las Vegas, but I can’t tell—remember, what happens in Las Vegas, stays in Las Vegas! Thanks for sending me!
DOOR PRIZE, provided by Ken James, was won by Ellen Mills!
50/50 for $23.50 was won by Bryce Ginther!
MEGA 50/50 grew to $189, but Pat couldn’t find that King of Clubs, despite shuffling the deck of 41 cards herself! She pulled out the lowly 2 of Clubs!
