ANNOUNCEMENTS
Summerfest Chair Skip Patton thanked all who worked so hard this past weekend to make a great event happen. There were some problems, but they were solved, and he appreciated the efforts of those who came to do what had to be done. The parade was one of the best with great community participation, including AP’s champion girls’ basketball team! Our thanks to Jim Colabelli for the musical arrangements, and to the SL Chorale for the patriotic songs at the opening ceremonies and flag raising. We had great crowds both nights for the bands and fireworks, and although it was very hot, it didn’t RAIN!
Membership Chair Joe Behson
remarked on the poor attendance of SLK members at Summerfest. Only 50%
came at all over the 3 day event. Despite having Uncle Marty’s restaurant
providing the food, members were needed for a myriad of tasks, and those who
were present were over taxed. Discussion was held regarding this, and the
conclusion was that solid signup sheets for each task are needed, and phone
calls should be made as reminders when members do not show.
Sandpiper editor Peg Weiss will be out of town for the next two weeks, and a substitute reporter is needed for the meeting of July 19. Next week’s meeting is the Summerfest picnic and no bulletin will be published. Please volunteer to take notes, write them up, and email them to Dave Booker for pictures and mailing.
Secretary Pat announced that DUES WERE DUE JULY 1st and that more than half the membership is in arrears!
Social Chair Eve Ward reminded everyone that next week is our R&R picnic at Butler Park, and that SLK members, families, and friends are most welcome. Please let Eve know how many will be coming, and bring a dish of your choice to share. Pavilion facilities are limited, so bring tables and chairs for your own comfort.
FOUND during park cleanup this morning: heavy duty orange extension cord, executive chair, container of trash bags, set of keys. John Brownrigg is MISSING a cooler, but was reunited with his “man bag”!
JULY BIRTHDAYS: Clayton Besch, Bob Carpenter, and Joe Trupia – all absent – no singing!
JULY ANNIVERSARIES: Bob & Joan Carpenter, and John & Suzanne Brownrigg, 38 years!
John: “Only my wife’s married!” so we sang to Suzanne, and enjoyed Eve’s lemon blueberry cake!

HAPPY DOLLARS
$ Joe Behson: My son and grandson were up for the weekend and enjoyed the fireworks!
$ Jim Rogers: Bob Pasquarelli’s prayer at the ecumenical worship service was the best I’ve ever heard! {And a hearty amen to that from the editor!}
$ Jerry Tysiak: Skip has finally learned what it’s like to be Summerfest chairman! Also, I wasn’t on vacation, I helped move my daughter to Maine!
$ Jim Colabelli: Summerfest 2010 is over!! Also, I just love the “dump juice” I found in the back of my truck when I got home after the cleanup session this morning!
$ John Brownrigg: I’m so happy for the recovery of my handbag! And since we didn’t do the food tent, my dog didn’t eat my shirt and I didn’t have to strip in the garage because I smelled like a hamburger!
$ Joe B again: LTG Noreen and Margaret won a trophy in the tennis tournament, but I’m not saying which trophy!
$ Dave Booker: I was happy to meet one of our guests at SF and learn that he was a Past (1992-3) Governor of the Carolinas District of Kiwanis! He used to live at Glass Lake! Also, my pleasure at being relieved from the hot ticket booth was short lived when Skip said he’d take over for me, because he wanted me to “go get the fireworks truck unstuck from off the hill by the softball field”! (The troopers did a yeoman’s job of doing that!)
$ Nancy Davis: Kudos to Booker for all the dunks he took in the Key Club dunking booth!
$ Skip Patton: Thanks for the hard work of ALL, and for the great shirts!
$ Pat Lane: My grandson fell off a roof, shattering his heel, but he’s had surgery, now wears a cast, but will be okay eventually! And thanks for a great weekend!
50/50 for $19 was won by Pat!
MEGA 50/50 grew to $217, but Pres Gary couldn’t do any better than 5 of Hearts from 40 cards!

Kiwanis Info Corner
Your Membership Committee Chairman asks, “Did you miss Summerfest this year and did you miss our club’s post-Summerfest meeting Monday night? If so, the 50% of the club that attended both REALLY MISSED YOU! Yes that is right, one half of our members showed up and worked at our largest fund raiser, Summerfest. That left the always faithful other half to do all the work.
Active Kiwanis membership means participating as you can in our club’s community service projects and attending club meetings as often as you can. Naturally, there are many valid reasons a club member cannot attend a particular event or meeting but there is a real difference between being a member and being a Kiwanian, and that difference is involvement.
Those who attended Monday’s post-Summerfest club meeting were able to provide some great suggestions to the Membership Committee as how to encourage greater member participation. These suggestions included:
· Event coordinators reaching out to members who infrequently participate to let them know what they can do to help us,
· The Club Secretary providing a monthly club meeting attendance report to the Membership Committee,
· The Membership Committee personally contacting members whose attendance has slacked off to let them know they are missed and what activities are planned so they can become more active,
· Consider establishing a calling tree for community service projects whose success requires additional Kiwanis help to be successful.
It is the club’s hope that these measures will build greater member involvement and prevent burn out or disillusionment of our club’s worker bees. If you have additional suggestions please contact Membership and Education Chair Joe Behson.
