PROGRAM
Kevin
Sarsfield introduced Kiwanis Education Chair Bob Pasquarelli who
presided over a question and answer session concerning
some facts about Kiwanis. We were reminded that “a Kiwanis Club is a part of
a global service organization of volunteers dedicated to changing the world,
one child and one community at a time!” The Board of Directors directs the
activities of the Club, along with the President and the Committee Chairs.
You become an officer by nomination and election. Members are kept in the
Club by good programs, good projects, and involvement in activities. The
Lieutenant Governor is the leader of the Division, and presides over meetings
of all the clubs in the division, while inspiring them to work on joint
projects. Requirement to be a Lt Gov is to have served as president of the
Club. Active Past Lt Govs from the Sand Lake Club are Woodie Hacker, Bob
Pasquarelli, Ken James, John Brownrigg, Dave Booker, and Jim Rogers. Bob
Loveridge is the present Lt Gov. An interclub is a visit of at least 4
members of this club to a meeting of another club, for fellowship, education,
and cooperation with projects. A “Round Robin” is completing visits of a club
to all other clubs in the division within a fiscal year.
Our new International President is Tom DeJulio from the NY District who leads all the clubs in the world, is an ambassador for all Kiwanians, and is the “face of Kiwanis”. Members can learn about Kiwanis from the Kiwanis Magazine, The Empire State Kiwanian, and from attending District and International Conventions. Kiwanis headquarters is in Indianapolis, Indiana. This year’s NY District Convention is in Niagara Falls, NY next month. The major Kiwanis project is EliMiNate, which is working to eradicate Maternal and Neonatal Tetanus in underprivileged countries. An Aktion Club is composed of disabled adults. The service leadership program is the Kiwanis Family: K-Kids, Builders Clubs, Key Clubs, and Circle K. The final question asked members why they were Kiwanians: wanted to serve the community, was invited, had been in the K Family as a youth. We were reminded to look at our three Honors Banners which are covered with patches given as testimony to the many projects we have completed! Thanks to Bob for an excellent program which should remind all of us why we are here!
HAPPY DOLLARS
$ Eve Ward: My grandson Drew who worked on a biomedical engineering project for a water filter has just learned that it is now being used in Peru!
$ Skip Patton: Took a one day trip to Buffalo and back because my son Steve’s ship was in port on Lake Erie unloading grain from Wisconsin. This Great Lakes freighter was huge and I was privileged to take a tour. The bridge looked like something from Star Trek!
$ John Brownrigg: Happy to join 21 Kiwanians from the Van Rensselaer Division at the New Lebanon Theatre Barn for a Tailgate Party before seeing a good play yesterday!
$ Joe Behson: My tennis instruction business is almost too good! I taught 7 hours in this 90 degree heat!
$ Jim Rogers: Happy to have Jim Hoffman here for his second visit! And, Elroy Face, former APHS baseball star and Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher, visited APHS and donated much of his memorabilia!
$ Kevin Sarsfield: You didn’t have to listen to me tonight! Thanks to Bob!
$ Bob Pasquarelli: St Henry’s Church has a new pastor, Father Tom Holmes! I’m hoping that my job will lessen, and I can return to retirement status!
$ Ken James: I have just survived another birthday!
$ Jim Hoffman: Since Elroy left Averill Park before his graduation to join professional baseball, he will be getting his high school diploma very soon, at the age of 84! Also, my daughter was married this past June 30th, and the next day I became your Superintendent!
$ Barb Fioravanti: We also went on one of the last tours of the Albany Aqua Ducks, and are very sorry to see them leave town!
$ Bill Whipple: It’s great to be back! We spent 2 weeks in Nairobi, Kenya and vicinity. It’s quite warm during the day, but at the equator it’s cold at night!
$ Peg Weiss: I spent the weekend in Plattsburgh attending my 60th college reunion with 6 of my classmates! Began and ended the time eating the famous Michigan Red Hots, the hot dogs you can get only in Plattsburgh!
$
Pat Lane:
My friend’s son interviewed for AP’s superintendent, and I’m so glad
that Jim Hoffman was chosen for the job!
DOOR PRIZE, provided by Kevin Sarsfield, was won by Bob Pasquarelli!
50/50 for $25 was won by Dudley Dorr!
MEGA 50/50, worth $407 this week, will keep growing because although Eve Ward’s ticket was pulled, she picked the 10 of Diamonds instead of the King of Clubs! Better luck in two weeks?
