Division Council Meeting Wednesday at Castleton. Behson, Rogers, Booker, Van Praag, Pasquarelli, Tysiak, Ward and Lane will attend.
Presentation:

Key Clubbers Jillian and Molly made a presentation requesting funding for Columbia HS Key Club officers to attend the Key Leader Conference in Pittsfield, MA on 10/22. They anticipate 4 members attending, and are willing to pay part of the $175 fee themselves. This should be addressed at the next Board meeting August 2.
Delegates were elected to the NY District Convention in Binghamton August 20-22. Peg Weiss, Eve Ward and Jim Rogers will be delegates. John Brownrigg will be alternate #1 if he is not representing the East Greenbush club. Serving at large will be Dave Booker, Bob Loveridge, and Bob Pasquarelli.
Thank you’s were read by Secretary Pat. The band Overture thanked us for hiring them to play Sunday night at SummerFest. Columbia HS Key Club Faculty Advisor Gretchen Schulz thanked SLK for sending 9 members to the NY District Leadership Conference and included a $75 refund check as SLK had paid for 10 to attend. Cindy & Jerry Tysiak thanked us for the card we sentx0x0x0. The Sand Lake Bicentennial Commission sent its thanks via Nancy W. Davis for the accommodations at SummerFest, as did the Historical Society via Mary French. Boy Scout Troop 526 (which we sponsor) sent a check for $300 as a first payment on the loan we made them for an equipment trailer.
Ways & Means Skip reiterated thanks for everyone’s hard work for a smooth and successful SummerFest. He reminded everyone to make sure their hours are accounted for on the tally sheet passed by Joe Behson. Anyone who has not entered their hours should contact Joe by phone.
Da Guv announced that Tech Valley High School, which is located in Rensselaer but draws students from all over the Capital District, is interested in forming a Key Club. Dave said he would be willing to serve as Kiwanis Advisor, as he’ll soon be unemployed Kiwanis-wise and will have the time. As SLK will be losing Columbia to East Greenbush Kiwanis, and as many of the other Van Rensselaer Division Kiwanis Clubs sponsor more than one K family club, perhaps we could consider that.
Music in the Park urgently needs volunteers, as Joe Cybulski is recovering from surgery and unable to continue taking responsibility for this project. For each of the 5 Sundays in August, the band needs to be contacted, keys to the electric panel and bathrooms need to be picked up and returned to the Town offices, and arrangements made with SLCA in case of rain. It doesn’t have to be the same person each week. Kevin Sarsfield has the info but cannot take on the responsibility as he is otherwise engaged each of the Sundays in August. If you can help even one of the Sundays, or if you need more info, please contact Kevin at 674-8592. We have made a large financial and social commitment to this project, so the need is urgent.
Program:

Deacon Bob on Kiwanis 101. Q: What is a Kiwanis Club? A:A Community Service organization which is part of Kiwanis International. Q: Who directs the club’s activities? A: The membership through the Board of Directors. Q How does one gain office? A: Be absent the day of the election. Whoops, no, election by the Club membership according to provisions in the bylaws. Q: How do we retain members? A: By keeping them involved in interesting, worthwhile projects, both fund-raisers and community service, so they see their efforts are needed and appreciated. Also by being VERY SERIOUS at all times. This evening we were especially attentive to this effort for the benefit of the Key Clubbers present. Q: What is the Lt. Governor? A: CEO of the Division, in our case Van Rensselaer. We have many past Lt Governors in our club: Ken VanPraag, Woodie Hacker, Bob Pasquarelli, Ken James, JohnBrownrigg, Dave Booker and Jim Rogers. Present Lt. Governor is Noreen Barrett of North Greenbush KC, next year Wendy Prout of Troy KC. Q: How does one become Lt. Governor? A: Drop one’s guard in a weak moment. NO!!! Seriously! Election by members in attendance at the annual Division Council election meeting. Q: What is an Interclub? A: A group of 4 members from one club visiting another club’s meeting. The purpose is to share ideas and fellowship, promote mutual support, and eat good food. Q: What is a Round Robin? A: One that has discovered a good worm supply. Also a club’s completion of an interclub to each of the other clubs in the division. Q: What is a District? A: Divisions are combined into Districts, and ours is New York. Our present District Governor is our own Dave Booker, first Governor ever from Van Rensselaer Division. Q: Who is the International President? A: Paul Paliziola, to be followed in October by Sylvester Neal, then Alan Penn, then New York’s own Tom DeJulio. Q: How can we learn more about Kiwanis? A: From the Kiwanis magazine, the web site www.kiwanis.org, or ask a knowledgeable Kiwanian like Membership & Education Chairs Bob Pasquarelli and Joe Behson, a Legacy member, or Dave Booker; and ESPECIALLY by attending meetings and conventions. Q: Where is the next International Convention? A: Geneva, Switzerland. After that, New Orleans, LA, USA, and after that Vancouver, BC, Canada.

Happy Dollars:
Eve is happy for grandson Ethan’s successful graduation party even though 60 showed up due to the wonders of Facebook.
Joe Behson, shown on right, is happy that the NY Yankees are cruisin’ along as compared with….

John Brownrigg may need a PSA (no no, Public Service Announcement) regarding availability of tents. He is also VERY happy to have installed central air in his house, and happy to see Key Clubbers Jillian and Molly, who have also been visiting the East Greenbush Club which will eventually be their sponsor.
Jim Rogers enjoyed a visit to his 92 year old high school coach in Northville.
John Mulligan enjoyed a trip to Alaska with wife Pat, including the highlight, a trip to Denali. Pat is doing very well, for which we are all happy.
Ron Wagner is happy that son Andrew is back Stateside from service in Afghanistan with the US Army.
Armand gave a happy dollar for Kevin’s invocation on the subject of golf.
Nancy W. is happy to have Jillian and Molly visiting us, and that our portable sign’s appearance is much improved due to a paint job by John Brownrigg.
