ANNOUNCEMENTS
Ø MUSIC IN THE PARK was music at the Arts Center during a windy rainstorm. The Reverberators provided a great concert that had toes tapping, both in the seats and on the dance floor. The band announced that they had a perfect record with us: all 3 appearances were rainy, and they haven’t yet played “in the Park”! Next week is the final concert, and hopefully it will be a sunny one, so it will really be in the Park. The Georgie Wonders Orchestra will play big band music. Do we have a host? Someone needs to tend to the housekeeping—get the keys to the bathrooms, turn on the power, etc.
Ø STEAK & LOBSTER BAKE is this Friday Aug 27 at Camp Rotary. Reservations are closed as of tonight. Those who promised either a salad or dessert, please remember it! Helpers are needed for set up, cooking, and cleanup.
Ø VALLEY CATS BASEBALL GAME is in lieu of next week’s regular meeting. All 40 tickets have been sold!
Ø KIWANIS FAMILY FUN DAY for all Kiwanis organizations in the Van Rensselaer Division will be held at the Schodack Town Park on Rt 150. $10 for adults—come and bring family, friends, and kids!
Ø FOOD TRAILER help will be needed for the Sundays of Sept and Oct at soccer fields.
Ø Eve Ward has singlehandedly completed the school supplies project! For elementary students, 48 packets were given, 16 to each school, and about $200 worth of supplies were provided for middle school students. All supplies have been delivered to the appropriate schools. Thank you, Eve, a committee of ONE, for a job well done, and promptly!

NY DISTRICT CONVENTION REPORT
Delegate Jim Rogers: Thank you for allowing me to be a delegate. Each time Gov Dave leads a large group he gets better! The new Kiwanis International World Wide Service Project is EliMiNaTe – Eliminate Maternal & Neonatal Tetanus – which will be officially kicked off at next year’s international convention in Geneva, Switzerland. The time until then will be informing and educating Kiwanians and the public at large about this mostly unknown disease in civilized and developed countries. It is mostly found in the 40 poorest countries of Africa and Asia, and kills within a week of childbirth. About 129 million mothers and babies are at risk and a baby dies every 9 minutes. It is estimated that $110 million will be needed to be raised to complete the eradication by the 4 year goal (the end of 2014). Part will come from Kiwanis, and part from corporate foundations. The project is a joint operation between Kiwanis and UNICEF—Kiwanis to provide the money, UNICEF to deliver the actual immunizations. MNT can be easily prevented with 3 shots costing 60 cents each to mothers during their childbearing years. Plans are to provide education, mass inoculation, train mothers, and provide clean birthing kits. For more information see the website at www.TheEliminateProject.org.

Delegate Peg Weiss: This is the latest of many conventions I have
attended, district and international, both as a member’s guest and as a
member, and each one reinforces the pride I feel at being a part of this great
organization! Local club and division activities are important, but you
really get the bigger picture when you hear about all the things others are
doing. Kiwanis does SO MUCH GOOD in the world, and is truly a global
organization! I was inspired by hearing about the new world project—to
eliminate a horribly fatal disease that I had barely heard of (even after 40
years of school nursing)—a disease, like so many others we don’t have to worry
about any more, that is so easily preventable with immunization. I do hope we
become very active in working for the success of this project. I was
impressed when IDD was eliminated in 9 years with 5 cents worth of iodized
salt, and we’re aiming to rid the world of MNT in 4 years! I attended the NYD
convention in Binghamton 5 years ago, just after they were flooded, and the
city has greatly improved since then. They have some terrific restaurants,
all within walking distance of the hotel. It was a pleasure to attend Gov
Dave’s business meetings because he ran them so
perfectly—on time, orderly,
and very properly. It was sad to see him “un-installed”, but we are glad to
have “Just Plain Dave” back with us again! Yes, I know he’s still Governor
until October! Thanks for naming me a delegate.
Delegate Eve Ward: This is the first time I’ve attended an out of town convention, and was proud to be a delegate for Sand Lake. I met many people, attended lots of meetings, and enjoyed the events. We had a great time, despite too little sleep, and too much food!
Sergeant At Arms Bob Loveridge: My job was to keep order at the business meetings, to prepare for possible emergencies of any kind, and to preserve the integrity of the voting process. Fortunately, due to the advance preparation of Gov Dave and his staff, things went very well! I was very appreciative for the assistance of John Brownrigg in this job. The new project EliMiNaTe MNT fits right in with my job as Chair of the Young Children Priority #1 Committee. With the club’s support, I would like to aim our work towards this goal, as well as to continue the support of the PICU and NICU at Albany Med’s Children’s Hospital.
Immediate Past District Governor Dave Booker: I am very appreciative of the support this club has given me during these past two years, and although I have thoroughly enjoyed this experience, I am looking forward to again being “Just Plain Dave”. Each person present was given a notebook folder imprinted with his Booker’s Builders logo.
Secretary Pat Lane and John Brownrigg were also in attendance at the convention, with John representing the new East Greenbush Kiwanis Club.
PROGRAM
Tonight’s planned program, reports of the duties of each committee, was postponed until a later date, due to the intensive discussion of the district convention activities.
HAPPY DOLLARS
$ Brownrigg: In honor of our newly displayed banner, “Home Club of the Immediate Past Governor”!
$ Peg: For the hard work and dedication of our own Booker Dave!
$ Eve: For Dave, and also in recognition of the ultimate sacrifice of one of my former kindergarten students, Derek Farley, who was killed in Iraq.
$ Jim Rogers: for Dave’s year as governor, for my 3 ladies who accompanied me to lunch at The Lost Dog, and for both our Sergeants At Arms!
$ Dave: for the support of this club, and for my 9 Booker’s Hookers who accompanied me to supper at Dillinger’s, where a strange man thought I was truly in business!
$ Joe Behson: I missed the convention, but had a wonderful trip to Geneva, Switzerland and the French Alps, where Margaret’s family joined us! I’m looking for reimbursement from KI for scouting out the area for next year’s convention!
$ Skip Patton: for Dave’s great job, and for a terrific week in Maine at a cottage on an island!
$ Fred W: for last week’s program on current events, one of which sent me to the library for more information, and found a good book on global warming alarmism!
$ Barb: for Dave, and also that no one was hurt, and that my plane is insured, after a mishap while landing at Lake Winnipesaukee, NH that punctured the hull!
$ Bill Whipple: again for Dave, and for my stress test being good, the rehab is over, and the doctor telling me to “enjoy life”!
$ KVP: glad last week’s program was well received, and for the prestige Dave Booker has brought to this club by being the very first district governor from Sand Lake Kiwanis!
$ Jerry: welcome back, “Just Plain Dave”!
$ Pres Gary: son Scott returned to his home with his mother, but 1100 miles is STILL too close for my ex! {This sounds a bit familiar, doesn’t it? ED}
