SEPTEMBER BIRTHDAYS:  Joe Behson, Ken Noland, Jim Rogers, and Ron Wagner

SEPTEMBER ANNIVERSARIES:  Clayton & Louise Besch, Barb & Gene Fioravanti, Carol & Dick Johnsen, and Ken & Nadine Noland.  We sang, not too badly for the 3 birthday boys, but poor Barb had to suffer through a pathetic rendition!  But Eve’s chocolate frosted gold cake was terrific!

Present at the meeting with September birthdays were Jim Rogers, Joe Behson and Ron Wagner also present but with a September anniversary was Barb Fioravanti.

PROGRAM

Joe Grillo introduced Alice Miller from the NY State Public Service Commission to speak about Alternative Energy Sources.  Joe said Alice had been with the PSC since 1981, and despite her impressive educational credentials, she was a “very nice person!”  Alice commented on a prepared slide program-{Thanks, Chet, for the bailout!}  Our appliances are more energy efficient today, but we are using many more of them.  The Governor’s goal is “15X15”—15% less energy usage by 2015.  The state hopes to activate renewable sources of energy—hydro, biomass, geothermal, wind.  Some of the programs emphasize residential lighting (the new compact fluorescent bulbs—they’re working on methods of disposal).  LEDs are coming, but need to be adapted.  New housing construction should include the correct specifications, such as Energy Star central air conditioning.  Think Global – Act Local.  Communities need to establish local energy plans, conduct community audits for efficiency in public buildings, reduce lighting costs, change building codes, and develop wind power programs.  Individuals and families should turn appliances off when not in use (vacations) wherever possible, turn thermostats down 2 degrees in winter, up 2 degrees in summer, seal and weatherize all windows and doors, insulate attic and crawl spaces, install a programmable thermostat, supplement air conditioning with fans, limit hot water use and lower the temperature, wrap tanks and pipes, install low flow plumbing, and plant trees!

Bob Pasquarelli thanked Alice and presented her with our Certificate of Appreciation.

HAPPY DOLLARS

$       Eve:  Thanks for all your help with the Steak & Lobster Roast!

$       John Brownrigg:  I just paid my school tax bill today, and guys, do you have the tar and feathers ready for our esteemed Superintendent?

$       Jim Rogers:  Congratulations to Dave and Joe for becoming Distinguished Kiwanians!

$       Barb:  Averill Park Key Club has a new advisor, Olga Ashline!

$       Bill Whipple(shown on right):  All these years we’ve taken Chet for granted with his trailer work.  Yesterday I first went to the wrong school(well it has been some time since I last hauled the trailer!), then couldn’t figure out how to get back to the trailer with all the new construction obstacles, then found the gate was locked, and the keys were IN the trailer!  But I finally got the trailer back to its home!

$       Joe Grillo:  Thanks to Alice for the program, and to Chet for coming to the rescue with his own computer equipment!

$       John Brownrigg (again):  Just to let you know, I pay more for my small piece of property in the town of Bethlehem, than I do for my house in Sand Lake!

$       Dr Jo:  First week of school running rather smoothly, no schedule problems with our computers, but I come here and get grief!

$       Peg:  Can I change the subject?  Thankfully I had a safe and fairly smooth trip to Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri to attend my grandson’s graduation from Army basic training.  After spending the whole summer isolated from civilization, they sure made a soldier out of that young man!

$       Gary:  My son in DC has been working on hurricane preparations, and will be getting some help from New York State.

$       Jim Stacy:  Celebrated my mother’s 80th birthday yesterday.  Our daughter is off to Brazil, and thanks SLK for support for soccer camp.  Proceeds went to the KPTU in Albany!

$       Skip Patton:  My 25 yr old son Scott is 2 months into a cross country motorcycle trip to see America, and is having a great time!

DOOR PRIZE, free dinner next week provided by Joe Grillo, was won by Mikki McSherry!

50/50 for $28 was won by Skip Patton!

MEGA 50/50 is slowly growing despite Brownrigg’s best efforts to find that King of Clubs in the 48 cards.  No luck—he drew the 6 of Hearts!  So tonight’s $52.50 will carry over to next week!

NEXT WEEK            PROGRAM:  Joe Behson—Debra Roy to report on SLCA summer activities

Jerry Tysiak convened meeting of new Board of Directors, and requested all meet at his home at 6 PM this Thursday for a strategic planning session.  Directions provided.  He is proposing some changes, hopefully for the betterment of the Club.  We will start on time, and eliminate the non-eaters table, integrating with other members.  Bob Pasquarelli will give a 5 minute educational talk about Kiwanis.  The last Monday of the month he would like committees to sit together to foster more communication.  He would like new members to have the autograph apron, and help out at the sign in table, to assist them in learning names and faces.  The Club will celebrate its 60th year in December ’09, and he would like us to have a Charter Night Dinner.  Club history will be on the web site.  Each member should expect to participate a minimum of 4 times a year in hands-on projects at the meetings.  Signup sheets may be on flip charts showing 3 months of activities.  New members will be asked to serve on a committee, and orientations will be expanded.  He would like to expand the directory, on the Club Management website, giving more information about members, possibly pictures.

Nominations were made and approved for Club Secretary, Peg Weiss and for the election to be held by the membership next week nominated by the board-designate were for Vice President, Gary Meislin; for Director to fill Peg Weiss’ unexpired term, Eve Ward.  Among the Committee Chairs appointed by Jerry were for Club Bulletin Sandpiper Committee, Jo Moccia, Chair, Jim Colabelli, and Pat Lane.
