PROGRAM

Debra Roy, managing director of Sand Lake Center for the Arts thanked Kiwanis for “getting things done”. She says that she always enjoys Kiwanis meetings! This past summer SLCA partnered with Kiwanis on a project to provide scholarships to allow youth to attend the SLCA summer classes. 8 students were provided the scholarships with the help of the APCSD. Sara Malenfant received one and was on hand to share her experience. Debra stated that the SLCA registration tripled for the summer thanks to APCSD providing information to families. 120 students enjoyed several classes including Circus Theatrics, Art-Smart, Creative Movement, Ko-Motion, Acting, Make-your-own Theater, and Creative Clay. Debra shared the fright that she had when the Creative Clay teacher bailed out at the last minute. She called the school district and Mary LaFleur and Ann Marie Parisi came to the rescue.

Sarah then shared her personal experience and thanked Kiwanis. She learned to project her voice, position herself on stage, respond to environmental cues (poor, rich, cold) etc. A final production was presented at the end of the session. Sarah had lot’s of fun, met new people, and thanked Kiwanis for the opportunity.

Debra asked Kiwanis to help brainstorm ways to help kids in the community who are biking and skate-boarding all around because they have no other activities. She also reminded the group about the SLCA 5th anniversary celebration on September 27.

Dave Booker thanked Debra and presented her with our Certificate of Appreciation.
