PROGRAM

John Brownrigg introduced David Tarsa, VP of Main Care's Energy Dept, who gave some remarks concerning the energy situation in New York, the nation, and the world.  We rely on mainly fossil fuels for heat and electricity generation but electricity is the most inefficient.  Solar generation is reliable only in certain areas, definitely not the northeast.  Years ago supply and demand were the determining factors in price fluctuations, but no more, due to politics, large company mergers, federal regulations, etc.  Multiple types of fuel now in use require large storage facilities.  About 1/3 the price of gasoline is a tax, plus adherence to environmental regulations raise the cost of production.  We need a national policy on fuel.  Individuals can help conserve energy by keeping their equipment clean and well maintained.  The US definitely needs more refineries--lack of them is the reason so much Alaskan crude goes to Asia where there are huge new refineries--but Americans react with NIMBY (not in my backyard!).  Q&A: new technology is attempting to use "gas chillers" for air conditioning rather than electricity, and "fuel cells" are still years away.  Peter Sentz presented Dave with the Certificate of Appreciation.
