PROGRAM: Doors of Hope
Mikki introduced Bob and Jean Work.
Jean shared some background on D of H and Hazel Baker, founder. Hazel’s
husband died suddenly years ago and after this loss Hazel found the
inspiration to develop a ministry to help others. She banded together with
some friends from her church gathered some donated clothes and food and began
Four Doors Down which was named such because it was four doors down from the
WSL Post Office. When Hazel passed away 5 years ago the name changed but not
the mission to help others. Jean has been there 30 years and has experienced
many sad and happy situations. Jean expressed her gratitude to
Kiwanis for the
service given to the community.
Bob explained that 5 years ago Hazel
died and the doors closed, but not for long. Hazel’s lawyer contacted the SL
Clergy group who decided to support the continuation and a representative from
each church worked together and the doors opened again. They now have a Board
and by-laws and are well organized. They sell
merchandise and sometimes have
more than they need. There is always work to be done. The excess goes to the
“Just Real” mission in Albany and some is even shipped overseas. The staff is
all volunteer as they have no paid staff. Students from Algonquin Middle
School volunteer, Hannaford’s helps, they have Government surplus to augment,
etc. The D of H helps about 145 families. Peg Weiss presented Bob and Jean
certificates of Appreciation for talking to Kiwanis about Doors of Hope.
