PROGRAM TOPIC: What are Interclubs? What is Kiwanis?
Fred Wurtenberger
described interclubs and provided the K International definition. It is a
means to meet the 5th object of Kiwanis, a means to form
friendships and provide altruistic service. It is a way to learn about other
clubs and to develop new ideas.
Bob P “It is a dubious honor to educate you people”! Bob asked “what is Kiwanis” and he received many answers! For reporting purposes here, it is community service, happy dollars, and making the community better one child at a time! In 1924 the 6 objects of Kiwanis were approved in Denver, CO. The 6 objects are:
o To give primacy to the human and spiritual rather than to the material values of life.
o To encourage the daily living of the Golden Rule in all human relationships.
o To promote the adoption and the application of higher social, business, and professional standards.
o To develop, by precept and example, a more intelligent, aggressive, and serviceable citizenship.
o To provide, through Kiwanis clubs, a practical means to form enduring friendships, to render altruistic service, and to build better communities.
o To cooperate in creating and maintaining that sound public opinion and high idealism which make possible the increase of righteousness, justice, patriotism, and goodwill.
SLK added the 7th, to have fun!
HAPPY DOLLARS
$Booker-had a weekend in Lake George with 95 college students from Circle K and the Governor and her husband.
$Jim R-Joe Cub had a really great article in the Advertiser (about the LG!). Also, Nov 21 is Compact Day as declared by Governor Paterson in honor of Albany County Society of Mayflower Descendents
$Eve-Two grandsons on Halloween pooled money and bought candy and stayed home to greet trick or treaters. Although they trashed the house and ate the leftovers, they did a great job!
$Joe B-Baseball is over so no happy $ for that but we are ½ way through the NFL season and the Jets are tied for 1st!
$Joe C-to Joe B, baseball is a 12 month sport. The Phillies won the World Series!
$Jim C- Chet Melius works hard. Jim was in his own yard last night at sunset and heard Chet’s truck and saw him hauling the Kiwanis trailer.
$Skip P- Happy to be able to vote tomorrow. It is a privilege to vote and we are lucky to live in America
$Barb F-Happy that Key Clubbers are
present tonight!
$Brownrigg-$10!! John described his emotional and spiritual and physical return to Viet Nam after 37 years. It was surreal, educational and spiritual. It was healing and he is happy to have had the opportunity to go. He sat next to people who were enemies from the Viet Cong. The Monteynard people saved him from the battle field and he drank rice wine with them out of a 4 foot straw! Viet Nam today is beautiful and the country is a forgiving nation based in Buddhism. John was able to share the toys and clothes he brought with him. He is certainly happy to have missed the last 2 1/2 weeks of political wrangling here at home!
$Alison Lashmet- $3 for SLK being welcoming; for Veterans and current soldiers; and for the presidential race being almost over. She can’t wait!
And now for the rest of the story....
$Gary-He is happy to share all of the
details of his hospitalization. He felt ill Thursday two weeks ago and by
Friday was in serious pain. He
phoned
Nancy Davis at 12:30 AM and she insisted that he go to the hospital. Gary
decided to drive himself! He ran off the road on 66, and found himself turned
around. Somehow he finally arrived at Samaritan Hospital! They checked him out
and realized he needed to be at Albany Med so they transported him there by
ambulance. The emergency crew was great. After some tests the vascular surgeon
put him into the OR at 2 AM. Four stents were put into his aortic artery
through his femoral vein. “Needless to say I didn’t have to get up to take a
leak” and “the nurses were great, although they did have to clean up after I
had a couple of accidents” (this is the point at which this writer attempted
to edit Gary’s comments but the group insisted that all be printed!!). Gary’s
son did come up from DC and is staying with him. It was five days before Gary
could have solid food, though he was able to keep smoking! Nancy Davis has
kindly been driving him around. Gary appreciated the singing provided to him
last week by SLK but does insist that singing lessons are needed. He also
appreciated the time given to him this evening to report his situation. The
vascular surgeon said his condition prior to surgery had about a 75% mortality
rate. By the way, Gary did give a hint of a smile tonight!
$Scott P-bought his wife a mother’s ring with his mega 50-50 winnings
$Jerry T- Happy that Gary is back and is happy that Alison could bear with us tonight!
DOOR PRIZE by Fred Wurtemberger was won by Kevin
50/50 for $ 24 won by Gary Meislin
MEGA 50/50 $135 with 42 cards. Card drawn by: Jo Moccia Card Drawn: 5 clubs….no winner, and the game goes on….
