Many interesting facts:
Many people (including Teddy Roosevelt) came from NYC to summer at the many hotels the Burden Lake House, Totem Lodge, the Crooked Lake House, Sand Lake Central Hotel etc. The Averill Park Hotel (located on the site of the present day Church of the Covenant) was originally a boarding school for young men being converted to a hotel in 1875.
The products of the area included farming, power (some of the areas first electricity and the water to power North America's largest water wheel at the Burden Iron Works in Troy - some 60' tall), fabrics (most of the US Army's wool long johns in WWI and WWII were produced here), glass, lumber, charcoal, strawberries (up to 7600 quarts in one day from only 2 farms) and the picking of wild fancy ferns (mostly for wholesale florists).
On the site of the West Sand Lake Elementary School was a horse race track.
The deed of a Salt Box home requires the annual rent of 2 bushels of winter wheat, the service of a horse and cart for one day and 4 fat fowl be paid to the Patroon.
Taborton was South Sand Lake, Snyder's Corners was East Sand Lake, Averill Park was simply Averill prior to 1882, Moscow is indeed buried in the Union Cemetery (Moscow was a horse).
Images of America - Sand Lake is available from the Sand Lake Historical Society, PO Box 492, West Sand Lake, NY 12196 for $23.50 (includes shipping and sales tax). This book features 234 pictures and captions from the hamlets of West Sand Lake, Averill Park and Burden Lakes, Sand Lake, Glass Lake and Crooked Lake, and Taborton as well as townwide events and more. Reserve your copy at the address above or for further information call (518)283-1067.

K-Toon caption: the $3.00 wining entry came from the Head Table (trying to conceal their identity - they win so often - by using a Orwellian doublespeak and calling themselves the "Front Table") and was "...I really want to be SLK President next year, I really want to be SLK President next year."
