PROGRAM

Jim Spath introduced his friend and employer Rick Kaplowitz, a contractor specializing in remodeling. Rick has done this type of work since he was 17, even before he obtained his civil engineering degree. In 1994 he was recognized by REMODELING MAGAZINE for an article "How to Better Remodel Your Home". Rick estimates he has remodeled between 400-800 homes, and knows there are degrees of skill involved: handyman, carpenter, contractor, builder, remodeler, designer, and architect. Remodeling is big business: people like their locations, want to stay where they are, but need to fix the house.

Jim making the introduction               Rick Kaplowitx

Rick enumerated the "10 BIGGEST MISTAKES PEOPLE MAKE WHEN REMODELING".

1) Hiring the wrong contractor: need to check references, insurance, permits, inspections, and warranties.

2) Taking the lowest bid: get 2-3 estimates, check plans and specs.

3) Improper planning: don't rush, consider all possibilities

4) Not reading the contract before signing: get job schedule, plan for disruption, avoid changes

5) Improper estimation of value: consider comfort factor

6) Not getting everything in writing: plans & specs, agreements, insurance, schedules

7) Retaining old products and appliances: false economy

8) Electrical, plumbing, structural overloads: things change!

9) Insufficient planning: disruption, security, pets, temporary storage, communication, work hours; who's in charge when owner not home?

10) Trying to do the job yourself! Inexperience does NOT pay, either in safety or economy; hiring a professional is well worth it.

The Certificate of Appreciation was presented by Joe Behson.
