Averill Park High School, had worked at Gurley's in Troy, is now a maintenance
mechanic at Engine Systems. He and
his wife Meg have 3 children and live at 4 Sunset Road, Averill Park 12018.
PROGRAM
Vice President-Elect Jim Rogers began with a thought provoking image of a "global village": earth shrunk into a village of 100 people, with all our social ratios intact. It would be made up of
8 Africans,
14 North & South Americans (only 6 from the US),
21 Europeans,
57
Asians.
Further detailed:
70 are NON-WHITE,
75
are NON-CHRISTIAN!
50 suffer from MALNUTRITION,
80
live in SUBSTANDARD HOUSING!
only 30 CAN READ,
and
only ONE has a college education!
50%
of the WEALTH will be in the hands of the 6 people from the UNITED STATES!
36 are AT RISK for IODINE DEFICIENCY DISORDER,
14
already with goiters or some degree of brain damage due to the lack of
iodine!
That is why concerned Kiwanians voted at convention in 1994 to rid
the world of this scourge, a promise we MUST keep to the CHILDREN OF THIS
WORLD!!
The remainder of the program were excerpts Jim read from letters written
to his great grandmother by his great grandfather while serving with the 188th
New York regiment in 1864 and 1865. He
described his travel from his home near Rochester, NY to City Point, VA, a
military embarkation tent city near the mouth of the James River.
He went by railroad to Albany, where he boarded a boat to go down the
Hudson River, past "unusable wilderness of trees and mountains, no
farmland", to New York City, where their weapons were issued.
They then shipped out on the
Constitution,
a journey on a rough Atlantic Ocean to Fort Monroe and up the James River to
City Point. They were marched to
Petersburg, VA, where they dug trenches. He
was wounded in the Battle of Dinwiddie Court House and spent considerable time
in hospitals, very weak, and trying to get a furlough to recuperate at home.
He described the confusion and sadness, which followed the assassination
of Pres Lincoln.
The club was most appreciative of this special introspective look into
our worst war from a very personal viewpoint.
Thanks, Jim!
